Viettel vs Mobifone vs Vinaphone: Which Network Is Best for Tourists?

Every Vietnam eSIM runs on one of three networks: Viettel, Vinaphone, or Mobifone. Generic global eSIM sellers rarely tell you which one you're getting, or why it matters. It matters a lot — the difference shows up exactly where you least want it to: on the mountain pass, on the island, in the middle of the Mekong Delta.

We're based in Vietnam and use all three networks daily. Here's the honest picture.

The short answer

Going beyond the big cities? Choose Viettel. It has the widest coverage in Vietnam by a clear margin, particularly in mountains, rural areas, and islands. Staying in Hanoi, Da Nang, Hoi An, or Ho Chi Minh City the whole trip? All three networks are good there, so pick by price — Mobifone and Vinaphone plans are often slightly cheaper for the same data.

Viettel — the coverage king

Viettel is Vietnam's largest network, originally built by the military, which explains why it reaches places the others don't: border regions, mountain districts, small islands. On the Ha Giang loop, in Sapa's villages, on Phu Quoc's quieter beaches, and along the Mekong's back channels, Viettel is consistently the last network standing.

4G speeds in cities are excellent, and 5G is live in the major centers. The trade-off: Viettel plans are sometimes priced slightly above the others. For most travelers doing a north-to-south route, that difference is worth it.

Best for: Ha Giang, Sapa, Ninh Binh countryside, Phong Nha caves, Central Highlands, Mekong Delta, Con Dao, Phu Quoc, motorbike routes.

Vinaphone — strong cities, strong tourist coastline

Vinaphone (the state telecom VNPT's network) is a close second in urban quality. Speeds in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City rival Viettel's, and coverage along the tourist coastline — Da Nang, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Mui Ne — is solid. It thins out faster than Viettel in the far north and deep rural areas.

Best for: city-and-beach itineraries, business trips, travelers who never stray far from Highway 1.

Mobifone — good value in urban Vietnam

Mobifone completes the big three. City performance is good and plans are often the most affordable. Rural coverage is the thinnest of the three — fine for the classic Hanoi → Da Nang → Ho Chi Minh City route, less fine if you're chasing waterfalls in Ha Giang. Note that some eSIMs sold as "Mobifone" are actually MVNO profiles like SKYFI that operate on Mobifone's radio network — same coverage, different brand name on the label.

Best for: budget travelers on the main tourist trail.

Coverage by popular itinerary

For the classic two-week route (Hanoi → Ha Long Bay → Hoi An → Ho Chi Minh City): any network works; Viettel gives extra margin on Ha Long cruises where towers are distant.

For the northern loop (Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Sapa): Viettel, no contest. Long stretches show one bar of Viettel and nothing else.

For islands (Phu Quoc, Con Dao, Cat Ba): Viettel first, Vinaphone second.

For city breaks and beach resorts: all three are fine — choose by price.

What about 5G?

All three networks launched 5G in the major cities, and it's fast where you find it. But don't choose a plan for 5G: coverage is still patchy outside city centers, and Vietnamese 4G is genuinely quick — more than enough for maps, streaming, and uploads. Battery-wise, many travelers keep 5G off anyway.

One thing that matters more than the network

Whichever network you choose, activate before you need it. Install your eSIM on hotel or home Wi-Fi, confirm it shows up in Settings, and let it connect automatically when you land. The number one cause of connection stress isn't the network — it's trying to set everything up on airport Wi-Fi at midnight after a long flight. Our install guide takes two minutes.

Bottom line
