Vietnam eSIM vs Airport SIM Card: What to Buy in 2026

You land in Hanoi at 6am, and the first thing you need is data: a ride to the hotel, a map, a translation of the menu. Vietnam gives you two ways to get it — a physical SIM from an airport counter, or an eSIM installed on your phone before you fly. Short answer: the airport counter is cheaper, the eSIM is faster and involves less paperwork. If your phone supports eSIM and you want internet the moment you land, buy the eSIM. If you are staying a month, want the lowest possible price, and do not mind a queue with your passport, buy at the counter.

What actually happens at a Vietnam airport SIM counter

Vietnam registers every prepaid SIM sold to a foreign visitor. At the counter you hand over your original passport — a photo, a scan or a copy is not accepted — and staff register the SIM in your name before activating it.

What that looks like in practice:

• Where: Viettel has counters at Noi Bai (T2, international), Tan Son Nhat (after baggage claim), Da Nang, Cam Ranh and Phu Quoc.
• How long: 5–10 minutes of staff time once you reach the front, per Vietnamesim's guide to airport counters. Add your queue time — several flights can land together.
• When you get online: after immigration, after baggage claim, after the queue. Realistically 30–60 minutes after you step off the plane.

One more thing worth knowing: not every SIM sold near an airport is registered properly. Kiosks advertising "no passport needed" sell SIMs registered to someone else or not registered at all — those can be cut off days later, in the middle of your trip, with no one to call. If a vendor tells you a passport is optional, walk away.

What happens with an eSIM

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. Nothing to swap, nothing to hand over:

1. Check your phone. Dial *#06#. If an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. If it does not, stop here — see our compatibility page.
2. Buy online and get an activation code (QR + text) by email within minutes.
3. Install it before you fly, on your home wifi or hotel wifi. This is the step people skip, and it is the reason they end up in a queue at the airport instead.
4. On landing, switch the line on. Data starts as soon as the plane door opens — the SIM is already registered, so there is no passport, no photocopy, no counter.

The trade-off: an eSIM is data only. It has no Vietnamese phone number, so you cannot call a landline with it (hotels, restaurants and drivers in Vietnam work fine on WhatsApp, Zalo, Grab and email).

Let us be blunt about the gap: at the counter, the carrier is cheaper than we are. Three to four times cheaper on the same network. If the only thing you optimise for is the number in the price column, buy at the airport. What the extra money buys is everything else on this list:

• No passport photocopy in your name, no queue after a long flight.
• You are online at the gate, not 45 minutes later — Grab, maps and your hotel's address work immediately.
• A registered plan from a licensed seller. If a code fails, we replace it; the person at the kiosk is not there at 11pm when your data dies.
• Support in English or Vietnamese on WhatsApp, not a phone queue in a language you do not speak.
• A plan that is actually active when it should be. If something is wrong, you message us instead of waiting in line again.

Which should you buy?

Buy at the airport counter if: you are staying a month or more and want the lowest cost per day, you have a spare hour, you carry your passport anyway, and your phone has no EID.

Buy an eSIM if: your phone supports eSIM, you land late at night or with a connection to catch, you are staying 3–15 days, you need data while you are still on the plane, or you simply do not want your passport photocopied at 1am.

Buy neither, and roam with your home SIM, if: your trip is under 48 hours and your carrier's roaming bundle is genuinely cheap. For longer trips roaming rarely wins.

Two mistakes to avoid

1. The "no passport, cheaper" SIM. Unregistered or borrowed-ID SIMs get cut off. You lose the money and the number mid-trip.
2. Buying an eSIM for a phone without EID. Dial *#06# first. Phones bought in mainland China, some Hong Kong/Macau "dual SIM" models, and a number of OPPO and older OnePlus models have no eSIM at all — no plan on earth will work on them. Our compatibility page has the check and the list.

FAQ

Do I need a Vietnamese phone number? Only if you want to receive local calls or SMS. All plans we sell are data-only; your home SIM stays in the phone for calls, texts and bank OTPs.

Can I use hotspot / tethering? Yes — all Vietnam plans allow it.

Can I keep my home SIM active at the same time? Yes, that is the normal setup: home SIM for messages, eSIM for data. Just switch off data roaming on your home line so you are not billed for background data.

What if my eSIM does not work after landing? First check *#06# for the EID, then Settings → Cellular → make sure the eSIM is selected as the data line and Data Roaming is on for it. If it still does not connect, message our support — most cases are fixed within minutes.

Can I buy at the counter and add an eSIM later? Yes, and some travellers do exactly that: an eSIM for the first days, and a month-long counter plan if they decide to stay.
