How Much Data Do You Actually Need in Vietnam? (2026)

Most travellers overbuy data. A few underbuy and end up hunting for wifi. The honest answer is that for a normal Vietnam trip — maps, Grab, messages, photos, a bit of Instagram — a plan with 5 GB per day is more than you will use, and the cheapest sensible choice is usually the 7-day MobiFone plan or a 10-day Vinaphone plan. Here is how to decide without guessing.

First: which kind of plan are you buying?

Vietnam plans come in two shapes, and they are not interchangeable:

Per-day plans (most plans). You get an allowance for each day, e.g. 5 GB per day for 7 days = up to 35 GB across the trip, and the ceiling resets each day. You are paying for days, not for a pool. If you use 1 GB today, you do not get 9 GB tomorrow — but you also rarely need to worry, because the daily ceiling is generous.

Total-data plans. You buy a pool that lasts until an expiry date, e.g. 10 GB for 30 days. Nothing resets. If you stream video on day two, it is gone on day three. These suit long, light stays — a month somewhere with good wifi, where mobile data is the backup.

Two things jump out. Longer plans are dramatically better value — the same Viettel network costs 6,857₫ per GB for 7 days and 2,800₫ per GB for 30 days. And the per-day plans are so generous that the total-data plan is 5–20× more expensive per GB: it is a convenience product for long, wifi-heavy stays, not a budget one.

Pick by trip, not by GB

Instead of estimating your megabytes, pick the row that matches your trip:

• 3–5 days, cities only (Hanoi, Da Nang, HCMC). 5 GB/day for 7 days is plenty. Cheapest sensible: SkyFi 7 GB/day 7 days — 138,000₫.
• 7–10 days, moving around (Hanoi → Ha Long → Da Nang). 7 GB/day for 10 days — 153,000₫ — or the Pottel 6 GB/day 10 days at 189,000₫ if you prefer Vinaphone coverage.
• 10–15 days, including islands (Phu Quoc, Cat Ba) or mountains (Ha Giang, Sapa). Take the 15-day plan; Viettel is the safer network on mountain roads. 300,000₫ for 75 GB.
• 2–4 weeks working remotely. You need a laptop tether, so buy a big per-day plan: Viettel 30 days at 420,000₫ (150 GB) or Vinaphone 30 days at 465,000₫. Video calls are the one thing that really eats data — tether on the plan's hotspot, not on hotel wifi, when the wifi is weak.
• A month, light use, good wifi everywhere. The 10 GB total plan at 390,000₫ only makes sense here. It is the most expensive per GB on the list, deliberately.
• A family or a couple sharing one phone as hotspot. Add up the days, not the people: one 15-day plan shared is usually cheaper than two 7-day plans, but check your phone's hotspot limit first.

How to see what you actually use

Do not guess — look at your own phone for one day, then multiply:

• iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data (scroll down for per-app usage; reset it the day you arrive).
• Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Data usage (or Settings → Connections → Data usage on Samsung).
• In-app: most carriers and providers show remaining data; on Viettel, dial *098#.

The pattern almost everyone sees: one full day of maps, Grab, WhatsApp and photos is well under 1 GB. A day of streaming video on mobile data can pass 2 GB on its own.

Five ways to cut data use

1. Download offline maps for your cities before you leave the hotel wifi — Google Maps lets you save a whole province.
2. Turn off background app refresh and auto-play on social apps. This is usually the single biggest hidden drain.
3. Set video streaming to 480p in YouTube/Netflix on mobile — it is roughly a quarter of the data of 1080p.
4. Use hotel wifi for uploads and backups (photos, iCloud/Google Photos), not mobile data.
5. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM. Otherwise your home carrier's background traffic is billed at roaming rates, quietly, in the background.

FAQ

Does unused per-day data roll over? No — that is the nature of a per-day plan: you are buying a daily ceiling for a number of days, not a pool. Choose the number of days your trip needs.

What happens when I hit the daily allowance? Check the plan's terms before you buy; the daily reset is what matters, and staying under the ceiling is easy unless you stream video.

Can I use hotspot / tethering? Yes, every Vietnam plan we sell allows hotspot.

Is 5 GB per day really enough? For most travellers, yes — comfortably. Buy the plan that matches your days, and if you are a heavy video user, choose the 7 GB/day MobiFone plan or a longer-dated plan.

Do I get a Vietnamese phone number? No — these are data-only plans. Keep your home SIM in the phone for calls, SMS and bank OTPs, with data roaming switched off.
